Journal #8 How are memories like a river?
Memories are like a river in the sense that they are free flowing and in no determined pattern. Thoughts flow from memory in the order that we think of them, and do not recur to us chronologically. A river also flows without order or pattern in whatever direction the water happens to go. The mind does not have control over how we subconsciously recall events that have happened, as we do not have control over where a river chooses to flow; although modern engineering and technology can in fact alter the path of a river. Regardless, in its natural state, a river is free flowing and chooses its own path, as memories come and go in no set pattern or form. Our subconscious determines what memories we can and cannot recall, and our minds suppress certain memories that we do not wish to recall. A river chooses its own path and course without any pre-determined destination, except that of which where it chooses to go. Memories can however be recalled on command if a person wishes to do so, and if our mind is capable of remembering it at the given time. Both a river and a memory are free flowing and incapable of being pre-determined by us.
