Journal #4 - Beauty
A person can be beautiful in many ways. A person can have inner beauty; beauty that exists in a personal manner that is more along the lines of the greatness of a person’s personality and overall character, and is not at all related to their exterior appearance. Exterior appearance could also be a thing of beauty, although exterior appearances are usually judged by the individual. There is no standard of beauty that all people can agree upon; rather, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Many different factors can go into what the viewer actually considers beautiful. Culture, for instance, can have a great effect on what a person considers to be beautiful. In American culture, for example, an abstract piece of art that would be considered by some to be a great beautiful piece may be considered an elaborate piece of garbage in another culture. Personal experiences can also have a great influence on what one person may consider beautiful. If a certain image can recall a certain fond memory or picture from a persons’ past, that image could be thought of as a beautiful image by that person. Several other influences could also play into what a particular person may consider beautiful, not so much a matter of a universal image.
