1. The four main motives of the new imperialists were economic interests, political and military interests, humanitarian and religious goals, as well as the concept of social Darwinism.

2. The Berlin Conference of 1884 was created to avoid bloodshed and wars in Africa over conflicting international interests.  It stated that a European power could not claim any part of Africa unless it had set up a government office there.

3. How did Ethiopia resist European colonization?

3. The reforming Ethiopian leader Menelik II modernized his country and hired European experts to plan modern roads and bridges and set up a western school system, as well as imported the latest weapons and European officers to help train   his army.  He successfully fought the attempted Italian invasion in 1896.

4. What is the Suez Canal?  How did it affect world trade?

4. The Suez Canal is a 100 mile waterway that links the Mediterranean and Red seas.  It affected world trade by greatly reducing the travel times from Europe to South and East Asia.

5. What caused the Sepoy Rebellion?

5. Several unpopular moves by the British East India Company caused the Sepoy Rebellion.  They required sepoys to serve anywhere, either in India or oversees, which was a religious offense.  They also instated a law that allowed Hindu widows to remarry, another religious offense.  Lastly, the British issued new rifles to the sepoys which required a soldier to bite off the tip of a cartridge, which was greased in cow fat, the final religious offense that caused the rebellion.

6. Name two main reasons why China’s policy of limiting trade with foreigners ended after the 1700s.

6. Firstly, China entered into a period of decline during the 1700s, and secondly, the Industrial Revolution created a need for expanded markets for European goods.

7. What was the goal of the Boxer Uprising?

7. The goal of the Boxer Uprising to was expel the “foreign devils” who were polluting the land with their un-Chinese ways.
