SOME PLOT SUMMARIES OF G & S OPERETTAS

 

THE NAMES OF CHARACTERS ARE REPLACED BY LETTERS

CAN YOU GUESS THE OPERETTA IN EACH CASE?

 

ONE

A loves B. C (A's father) loves D.

C wants E to marry A, and so does E.

But in the end...

D reveals that B is really C and C is really B, so A can marry B and C can marry D.

E marries F!

 

TWO

A loves B and C loves B. B loves A and D loves A. D is engaged to A.

But in the end...

C rather foolishly gives up the chance to kill A, and lets A marry B.

C reluctantly has to marry D.

 

THREE

A loves B. C loves D. E loves B. F loves G.

D marries B for a bit then falls in love with H.

But in the end...

H turns out to be D all along. A and G have to marry E and F, or else!

C is very, very depressed.

 

FOUR

A marries B and C marries D. E is in love with F but has to marry either A or C.

But in the end...

F turns out to be the one of A and C that E has to marry.

That's lucky!

 

FIVE

A marries B. He then becomes C and marries D. He then becomes E and marries both F and G.

But in the end...

A should have been A all along, so A, C, and E marry B, F and G. D marries H!!

 

SIX

A is in love with B, and B is in love with A, but C will not them marry, especially after he sees B with D. A dumps B in a fit of jealousy and agrees to marry E or F.

But in the end...

E and F let C marry A, but D turns out to be C's wife and B's mother. A and B get married before they change their minds again.

 

SEVEN

A, B and C want to marry D, E and F...so they do! (Probably the weakest plot of all)

 

EIGHT

A and B plot so that CDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXY and Z all fall in love with each other. A is unhappy with the result.

But in the end...

B dies, and CDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXY and Z all fall in love with different partners.
