Pilots in the Gaspé

The Linguistic Mentoring Pilot in Coastal Gaspé

Supported jointly by Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Canadian Heritage under the Interdepartmental Partnership with the Official Language Communities (IPOLC), the Linguistic Mentoring Program in the Gaspé Area is an initiative which has been planned with the assistance of the Gapesian CEDEC and undertaken by the Committee for Anglophone Social Action (CASA).

The General Objective of this Mentoring Program

The general objective of the program is to help, encourage and guide fishers association representatives and employees of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to maintain and/or improve their oral communication in English. The purpose of the mentoring program is to recruit, train and pair-up members of the English-speaking community (the mentors) with fishers association representatives and employees of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (the mentees or associates), in order to do so.

How this Mentoring Program Benefit the Gaspé Community?

The mentoring program will benefit Gasp as a community in many ways. The mentoring program will

  • allow fishers association representatives and DFO employees to maintain and/or improve their oral English communication skills in order for them to service more efficiently the English-speaking community

  • allow DFO employees to interact more easily with their English-speaking co-workers

  • improve relations between Gaspé English-speaking and French-speaking communities

  • enable the sharing of two cultures

  • allow members of each community to better understand the needs, challenges and possibilities of the other group

  • increase the intervention skills of Gaspés Department of Fisheries and Oceans representatives in Atlantic forums

  • help reduce the isolation the English-speaking community may feel

  • increase access for Gasps English-speaking communities to federal services and give them the opportunity to know more about the services offered

Regional Technology Ambassador Pilot

The Regional Technology Ambassador (RTA) Pilot Project is an initiative jointly funded by Industry Canada and Canada and Canadian Heritage through the Interdepartmental Partnership with Official Languages Communities (IPOLC). It has been designed to increase the technological skills of our local trainers, who in turn train Community Economic Development and Employability Committee (CEDEC) members and Local Action groups (LAG) members on how to use TableNET and other technological tools effectively. RTAs built skills to promote CEDEC and LAG activities on-line at the local level and make volunteers more aware of opportunities aimed at their communities on the World Wide Web.
