Pump, Filter, Blower
Filters are an essential part of any pool or spa configuration. There are several kinds of filters from cartridge (right), to sand, to DE. (Diatomaceous Earth) filter (left). My experience is that this filter is the most versatile and efficient style of filter on the market. The most important thing to remember if you need to replace your filter is the capacity of your filter. For example, you would not want to install a filter that handles 50 GPM's (gallons per minute) if your pump pushes 75 GPM's.
Pumps are important as well. You can literally install any size pump you want, however you don't want to install a pump that will not meet your needs. You can use from 1/2 HP pumps for waterfalls and filtration to 4 HP pumps for Swim-spas.
A Blower is used for an effect in a spa. It provides bubbles or the whirlpool effect. This is nothing more than a motor, usually ranging from 1/2 HP to 2 HP, designed to push air through the pool lines to induce air into the water, thus giving a bubble effect.
