Gary Oak (Shigeru Ookido in Japan, er reverse it), is one of the lesser shown characters on Pokemon. Although we have seen more of him then Ash's own mother. So anyway he isn't the least known, but he isn't the best known and us Gary fans intend to change that. Gary's hometown is Pallet. He built up a rivalry with Ash, which still continues. In the beginning Gary was self-absorbed and cocky. He didn't really think much about whether he would win or not and took breaks once in a while. In other words he thought he was serious, but he wasn't. As Gary traveled he would occasionally bump into Ash and always was ready to tell him about another badge or capture. When it came time to battle the Pokemon League Gary had 10 badges, 2 more than necessary, so he felt pretty confident. He is supposed to have won his first three battles well, but could not compete with a girl named Melissa and her Golem. After losing the fourth round he went home and we didn't see him again for about a year. Gary's story doesn't end there, no it doesn't. While Ash is travelling the Orange Islands Gary is training better and maturing, he becomes wiser about battles and willing to give even the little Pokemon a chance. Gary makes a comeback by booting Team Rocket out of Professor Oak's lab. Then battles with Ash, Ash didn't stand a chance against Gary's well trained Eevee. Gary then moves on to go to the Johto League. He learns even more and his Eevee evolves. He also compliments Ash on his training skills and has a better attitude. As Gary continues to travel through Johto we see him evolve as a trainer even more. When reaching the Johto League Silver Conference Ash again runs into Gary. We see more of the old Gary now, but not as much as before. Gary makes it through his first round of battles without much trouble. When it is time to battle Ash, Gary is not the victor. However, he doesn't feel that bad and seems happy for Ash. He then tells Ash that the Silver Conference is his last competition. He wants to become a Pokemon researcher and says that will be his new reason for travel. He says he will leave his old Pokemon behind and begin again with just his Blastoise. Gary is now friends with his old rival and is also Ash's inspiration to head off into the Hoenn region. Gary also leaves home. Where he's gone we don't know or if he will be back.
