I don't like sticking this here, but I gotta have it: Ok, I don't own Pokemon, any of the characters, etc. They are all owned by their respective owners. I am not affiliated with any of these owners either. Some characters were my own creation. Please don't steal my story idea or characters!

Sadly, Gary walked the path to his grandfather's house. "What will he say? I did awful, what am I doing here?" When he got to the door Gary realized it was locked and found a note. His grandfather had gone to the Indigo Plateau to see Ash. "He goes to see Ash, but not his own grandson? He knows we're rivals, he should know that would upset me."
Gary turned around and headed for his home, his sister May would help him, she wouldn't hate him for losing.

May took one look at Gary and gave him a hug. "Don't feel bad, it was your first time in the Pokemon League and not a lot of trainers made it as far as you did. Think of those who lost their first round battles." This almost made Gary feel a bit better, but did not help as much as he knew May was trying to.
After Gary had eaten something he went back to sleep, he was still very tired but mostly was trying to avoid his problems. When he woke up the next morning he turned on the T.V. and checked who was battling that day. Ash was battling a trainer named Richie. "I know him. He's the one who's been winning battles with only one Pokemon. Ash is going to have a hard time beating him," thought Gary. "Unless Ash really is stronger than me, maybe he can win." Gary thought of the battle Ash went through in Viridian City. Even though it looked hopeless Ash had still won, could he pull the same thing off again? For the next few hours he stared at the television trying to get some good training ideas. "How do these trainers do this? I can't find anything that will help me win. Maybe I need to come up with my own strategy."
Another few hours later it was time for Ash's match. Gary sat wondering where Ash was, Richie showed up, but Ash hadn't. He had always teased Ash about being late, but would he really be late for his fifth round match?

The results of the fifth round battle were a bit of a shock to Gary. Even though Ash was up against a Pikachu, and using a Charizard, he still lost. Charizard appeared to not want to obey Ash. "What was he thinking? Doesn't he know how hard Charizard is to control? Maybe he's not better than me. Maybe we're at the same training level, still trying to get there. Well, the first thing to do is study some more, and I know who can tell me where to do that."

Next day, there was a knock at the door and Gary got up to answer it. There he found Professor Oak. "Hi Grandpa," feeling more guilty about losing than ever. The professor came inside and sat down to talk to Gary. "You know you didn't lose because you're a bad trainer, you lost because you got over-confident, and theres a fine line between self-confidence and cockiness." Gary sighed and thought about that one. He had started it in the first place to intimidate Ash, but it led to talking to every trainer he met in that way.
Gary looked up at the professor, "Grandpa, I want to study some more and train some more. But, I want to go where the league doesn't have Kanto trainers. Just a place to study and people and Pokemon to battle with. I've already seen Kanto, and I know I'm not good enough for Johto. Where should I go?" The professor thought a minute. "Well, normally with you I'd say the Orange Islands, but you don't want to join a league with Kanto trainers. I would suggest heading north of Cerulean City, north of Bill's lighthouse, and into the territory of Mauranda. There is a league there, and the people there are very much into Pokemon battling and each town has a library of Pokemon books with plenty of information. You'd best get some sleep, I'll give you full details in the morning."

Gary wasn't tired however. He stayed awake, it was so long since he had lay down in his own bed. This wasn't all he was thinking about though. He thought of the territory his grandfather was sending him to, he knew it was delaying him a chance at getting into a league like Johto that year but he had to get more training and more studying. He turned over and thought of Ash, "Is he going through what I did when I lost my match? Maybe we're not so different, could we ever be friends like we used to be?" Gary thought back to those days when they were best friends, but those days were gone, "And its my fault for acting like such a jerk, what if I had acted differently the day we left? What if I had been nicer to him? What if I told him I'd wait for him while he got his Pokemon so we could see each other off? I can't change it now, I can never change it..."
What do you guys think? This is probably my second fanfiction idea, but the first one I'm actually trying out to get feedback for. Let me know what you guys think!
