Thanks go to Ian Elsworth,
for sending this photo of his find a George III 1/3 Guinea.
The 1/3 Gold Guinea is dated 1804
The obverse features a bust of King George III.
GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA: (George III by Grace of God) surrounds the bust.
The reverse has a crown surrounded by the Latin
legend BRITTANIRVM REX FIDEI DEFENSOR (British King, Defender of the Faith).
The date 1804 is below the base of the crown.
James, found this little beauty and this is what he wrote.
I had to dig down almost a foot.
When at last I reached the target I thought it was part of an old engine then
when I turned it over I saw this big fellow staring up at me,
needless to say I had a great big smile on my face.
I think my son must have given me some good luck today.
I sure would appreciate any information on this lion.
It is 7” wide and 8” tall also on the lion’s head there appears to be a crown.
So I am thinking this lion could have been part of a coat of arms, but that’s only my guess……….
