I would like to thank Roy Hogan, from New Zealand. For sending this great BB picture. That’s Bullets & Buttons,
Fantastic shot
Found on the outer environs of a Redoubt on private land which i had permission to search. The British Redoubt erected during NZ Land Wars of 1860s. Probably shouldn’t have painted buttons with gold paint, but will come off easily. Most of bullets in photo are .577 Enfield.
Do you recognise the lead seals, (Edwards Halifax). I read the history of this site recently, there was a trader who regularly visited the Redoubt and supplied the soldiers with lashings of booze (300 plus soldiers, good earn) so to keep discipline Colonel Wyatt confiscated all of it and sent it to the main barracks in Auckland (Albert Barracks). We searched with our detectors around where we believed the canteen was and found many coins, tokens (Aussie & NZ) and British currency including 1817 George111 half crown, 1852 florin (Gothic). Some East India Company money. Later.....Roy Hogan NZ.
Some more info on the pics, The bullets are .557 calibre Enfield, musket balls are similar calibre, that is the large ones Brown Bess musket i believe. Not sure of smaller musket balls, may be from the double barrel musket. The .557 Enfield was supplied to the Confederate Army for the American Civil War and i believe was favoured by them. I think some of the Union Regiments used it too but not as many as in the South. The buttons are British Regimental buttons 40th, 50th, 65th, 70th, and 101st Bengal Fusiliers (now Royal Engineers), all around early 1860s and older.
Lead seal with the inscription John Edwards & Son, Halifax
NZ Token...Morrin & Co.1860s
G Gittos, M Sommerville & H Ashton, all 1860s
1858 Australian Token
1852 Victorian Florin ( Gothic )
