Well, what a story! ....Was Barbara a Cordall? Well, from here it all get's very complicated, infuriatingly so. Why the name change? We had to sort it out. Barbara's father was born a Cordall, his Birth Certificate was quite clear, George Leonard Cordall, born 20th. March 1911. His father was down as John Cordall and yet John had been born a Corden! What was going on?
We would never get back at this rate! We hadn't really started and already we were cursed!. What a mystery? Why in heaven's name had we ever set out?

I went back to the Archives to find the marriage of John James Corden, Barbara's grandfather, and, having obtained the relevant information, Barbara mad the trip to the Registrar. Guess what!....He married Catherine Roberts on April 3rd., 1904, at St. Mary's of course, and his name was John CORDALL, and his father was George CORDALL!! Well, why, when both men were born with the name Corden, had they become Cordalls? Take a rest if you want, because the whole thing is set to become a nightmare! Worse!

At this stage we had to take a step back and consider what to do next. We had only scratched the surface and already we were totally confused. All we could do was keep digging, travelling back in time until we found some clue to unravel the mystery. I decided to look at the 1871 census. Be prepared!

It took a while to find George in 1871, but find him we did! He and Harriett were living with her parents in Bucknall. George was 21, and ...wait for it.....his name was Cordell!! So that was why, in 1869, James was buried as James Cordell. It's difficult to understand all these name changes, there are several possibilities, we'll discuss them later, let's press on back!
