It feels as if the film has everything that couldve made it great, yet the narrative structure isnt quite organized enough to make as much of an impact as it could have in the end. There is a sequence about half-way through on the beach, when Kikujiro gives the kid a small angel bell to help ease the pain of not finding his mother that feels as if the film shouldve ended with.
The film then goes on for another half-an-hour as an only kind of funny comedy as Kikujiro and his newfound friends attempt to entertain the kid. Much of these antics are just too ridiculous, such as that stupid human fish game. Takeshi made a good choice, however, to not make his character out to be the macho karate guy that looked to be forthcoming in a scene involving a group of angry guards. The film still manages to be a fairly uplifting, mystical, and humorous adventure even if it ultimately falls short of genuine emotional impact.
