It was on to something, but High Art simply ends up as a film that had potential largely because of some sloppy, ill-defined screenwriting. It gives some interesting insight into the artistic and sexual awakening/reawakening of two females, but director Lisa Cholodenko ultimately attempts to evoke too many emotions, expecting us to feel affected by situations that ultimately come across as overblown and unbelievable.

For instance, the character of Syds boyfriend James is sort of just used as a prop when he couldve been developed into an actual character who we care about or even hate. But were given so little insight into him that we just dont even care whether or not Syd leaves him for Lucy. Cholodenko attempts to develop the character simply through dialogue, with Syd saying that James hasnt been supportive of her when there were really no previous instances to back that up. The audience is left wondering what the hell shes talking about.

And I like many others, and rightfully so had a problem with the ending, not only because its so ill-defined and a lame attempt at shocking us simply by providing us with no logic as to how this death couldve happened, but because it just comes across as unconvincing hyperbole.
