The small degree of originality that the original film Analyze This contained has now been stretched far beyond its limits with this sequel.
Robert De Niro seems to just want to keep working. Of course, hes managed to do a great job at diversifying his roles and making sure that people never think of him as strictly a dramatic actor, but when he doesnt have a terribly interesting script to work with, hes still not that compelling to watch. And heres my question of the day: what is Lisa Kudrow doing being married to Billy Crystal?
The best laughs of Analyze That are found within the subplot involving Paul Vittis job as a crew worker on a television show starring Anthony LaPaglia; other than that, theres really nothing else here that wasnt explored to its fullest extent in the original. The story at the forefront of the film is an absolute nightmare to endure watching even though I do realize that this is (ostensibly) a satirical comedy and its not really meant to be taken seriously, theres still really no excuse to be ridiculously stupid, which this film often is.
Harold Ramis has, over the years, established quite a respectable body of work for himself. It disappoints me to realize that the man who directed one of the most insanely inventive comedies of all time Groundhog Day has now been reduced (or has reduced himself) to making this cliched, moderately-amusing-at-best material.
Be sure to stick around to watch the end credits, which truly do evoke more laughter than the film itself.
