The Evangelical Garifuna Council of Churches Honored the 209 Years the Garifuna Heritage since the Garifuna People Arrived in Roatan, Honduras from St. Vincent On Saturday April 08, 2006, At 344 Brook Ave Bronx, NY 10454,
Garifuna Day 2006 it was raining No Rain stops our Celebration
That Day reminded me of the scripture in Romans 8:37-39 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
In spite of the rainy day on our event Garifuna Day we still honored the Garifuna heritage, our plan and program went on as schedule. We didnt close the street; we couldnt have done any out door activities so we use our buildings. The community center we had the display/exhibition, food preparation and eating and fellowship. We had the ceremony in the church and the Garifuna Words Contest
It was an opportunity to meet a lot of Garifunas and know more about their heritage. Garifuna Day was a Great and Wonderful Event. This made many Garifuna people come together as one. There were many things going on such as dancing , singing, poem, Garifuna History, Language Contest and many more.
Many people came to the event. There were people from Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, Jamaica, and different part of USA (Iowa, Miami, New York, Virginia and other). Garifuna drum, the church band and gospel music were playing and people were dancing, eating and most of all having FUN!!!
Everything was excited. There were different kind Garifuna foods, Hudutu was one of the main dish, it was delicious.,
There was a Garifuna language contest for children and prizes for all the children that participated. They had to translate an English sentence into a Garifuna sentence. It was nice because it teaches them a lesson how to speak the language.
Everything was interesting and amazing. Everybody enjoyed themselves. We are planing for next year Garifuna Day, to have more wonderful things going on, if it is Gods will.
