Garfield says: I have been around cars and building motors since about the age of thirteen. My father taught me a lot about the function, and operation of cars as a whole. We built our first motor together when I was fourteen, a 350 cubic inch, four bolt main, chevy out of a '69 pick-up. The finished product was installed in a '72 Chevy Impala 2 door with rear concaved window. The end result was an approximate 500 horsepower streetable hot rod. It was an ugly, fading Root Beer Brown, but it could out run all the local authorities. By the time I was 20, I had experience with street rods, off- road, and many fabrications and modifications of our daily vehicles. At 20 years of age I was given my first opportunity to run a demolition Derby Competition. I continued to compete in Demolition Derbys for the next 8 years, where I had built a pretty credible reputation for myself. I was invited to compete at the Western States Demolition Derby Championship held in Reno, Nevada, and broadcast live on TNN Motorsports. We got a lot of coverage from that event and started to move on to better things. Although I continued to compete in Demo Derbys, I also branched out to compete in Stock Car racing with a partner, and Mud Bog Competitions with my brother in law. I took part in a few Drag Races with a Semi- Pro team as a technical advisor(mechanic). During this same time, I had a job with Summit Racing Equipment for two years. I learned a lot of things that I thought I knew enough about. It just goes to show, One never stops learning. I recieved first hand knowledge and information from the individual vendors themselves. Both years at Summit, we attended the Sacremento Sema Convention where I recieved even more info. Owners and technicians from individual companies would come in on a regular basis and update us with the lastest technology and innovations. Companies like, Eldebrock, Earl's, Aeroquip, Hypertech, Jacob's Electronics, Hooker Headers, Holley Inc, Goodyear, Keith Black Pistons, TCI, Competition Cams, etc. With this knowledge, I managed to get a voluntary status at a local track. I later became Director of Competition for two years. We held many events at the raceway including 3/8 mile clay oval stock car events for Bombers, Pro Stocks, Late Models, Western Legends Series, I.M.C.A. Late Models, Dwarfs, Midgets, and Nevada Truck Series. In addition we held Mud Bogs, Demo Derby's, Stunt Shows, Quad Races, A.M.A. Motocross Series, V.O.R.R.A. Off Road Racing Series, Sand Drags, and Tuff Truck Competitions. |
