| Monday 08/04/2002: After completing 6 National Orienteering League races in just over a week Gareth is now back home and recovering. In all it was a highly succesful week, with a best ever result in the National 3 Days event of 5th place overall, in the strongest field assembled in Australia since the World Cup races in 2000. Based on this top result Gareth was also named in the Australian National Senior Squad. The National 3 Days and Australian Short Championships were the most competitive in years, Rob Walters' dominance of the national 3 Days and the National League was finally broken by Dave Shepherd and David Brickhill-Jones respectively. | Friday 08/02/2002: Well it has been a big summer for Gareth so far, so big that he hasn't even updated his webpage until now! It started off with the Australian Champs carnival in October. Gareth used the ACT champs as a test race but seemed to still be feeling the effects of his illness from last year so decided not to race in the Australian Champs Individual and instead concentrate on the relay. Unfortunately Gareth made an uncharacteristic error on the first leg of the relay in a disappointing but somhow fitting end to what had been a terrible season. After finishing exams Gareth headed back home to Perth for Christmas where he enjoyed meeting up with friends and showing Kelly the sights for her first visit to Perth. After only a couple of days back in Canberra Gareth was off to New Zealand for the National Senior Squad training camp and a series of elite races. Gareth had his best results since the Eureka Challenge in March 2001 with the highlights being a great run in the first leg of the relay, only 2 mins slower than the fastest time of the day, and 7th place in the international park race. Now Gareth is back in Canberra and training like he hasn't been able to for over a year. Gareth can't wait for the first National League races of the year!! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
