Greta Garbo... Sensuous Beauty and Aura... |
|
| Greta Garbo..
The Subtle beauty and her
mysterious personality added to her allure and very desirable.
These qualities enabled her to get a few modeling jobs for the Stockholm
department store when she was young, which led to some film roles. She
was born on Spetember 18, 1905 in Stockholm, Sweden. Her real name was
Greta Gustafsson and in her early films she was billed under this name.
She gained a couple of good trade reviews and won a scholarship to the Royal Dramatic Theatre. While there, she was spotted by director Mauritz Stiller who was an important filmmaker in the early 20's. The Director became her mentor and lover, glamourising her image and changing her name to 'Garbo'.When MGM hired hired Stiller her bought Greta with him, and when filming 'The Torrent', 1926 there realised her potential. In 'Flesh and the Devil', 1927, Garbo costarred with John Gilbert, which became an off screen love affair, and made many pictures together, and it was said she didnt turn up for their 'Wedding'. Greta never married despite many affairs. Her first great success was Anna Christie, and the Garbo legend had begun. her aloofness and desire 'to be alone' served to increase her following. Her legend was through a loyal following and her unique sensuous beauty and aura were her main attributes. Her films always had that 'tragic type' ending, of never ending on a happy note. However she still showed her talent in comedy in 'Ninotchka' in 1939. Greta retired in 1941, and whilst nearly tempted back into the movies, she quietly lived in New York City, and died there alone in 1990.
