Ryan walked into the abc studios and wandered down several corridors into make-up. There was an air of surprise about his presence but no one said a word.
After make-up and wardrobe he made his way toward the set but ran into Craig Ferguson.
"Decided to make an appearance have you?" Craig jeered.
"Something like that," Ryan grumbled.
"Don't worry we're all on your side," Craig perked and gave Ryan a reassuring slap on the back.
"You shouldn't take sides," Ryan sighed, "but thanks anyway."
Ryan was about to walk away when noticed a coy smile on Craig's face.
"What?" Ryan asked.
"I know what you're up to," Craig half laughed.
"I'm not up to anything," Ryan said innocently.
"Bullshit…I've been hearing things on the grapevine," Craig mused.
"What grapevine?" Ryan scorned.
"The one from Britain…the one that tells me you and your friends have a hit TV show over there that's a rival for Whose Line," Craig said in a low voice.
"Shit…sometimes I forget you really are British," Ryan hissed.
"Aye and I tell you another thing…Drew will go mental when he finds out," Craig mumbled.
"You won't tell him will you?" Ryan begged.
"My lips are sealed…now excuse me while I put on a gay English accent and ponce about a bit," Craig jeered and disappeared.
Ryan sauntered onto the set, got a shocked look from Diedrich and then Drew noticed.
"Ryan, buddy, you're back," Drew perked.
"Not for long," Ryan grumbled.
"Oh man…you're not still cut up about Whose Line…if it’s any conciliation the fans have done nothing but protest since you left," Drew sighed.
"Actually I couldn't give a damn about Whose Line, but I still can't forgive you," Ryan spat. "Now you've got two weeks…I'll film what you want in that time."
"Two weeks…you won't even learn the scripts in that time," Drew gasped.
"What I don't learn I'll improvise…It’s what I do, or had you forgotten that?" Ryan snapped.
"I…I'll help him catch up," Diedrich piped up, diffusing the moment.
"Thanks," Ryan smiled.
After the most tense day on the set ever in the history of The Drew Carey Show, Drew arrived home; he raided the fridge and grabbed a beer before flumping on the couch. He switched the TV on and began to channel surf, The Golden Girls, Buffy, 24 Hour Shopping…
What Drew hit on next made him spit out his beer: there on the screen in front of him was Ryan, Colin, Greg and Tony and it wasn't an old Whose Line episode.
"Oh my god," Drew gasped. Not only did this show have all the audience's favourite improvers but also it was damn good. If it got on free to air TV it would certainly bring a near end for Whose Line.
Drew wasn't the only one who caught the show that night; Dan Patterson also stumbled across it. He too knew the trouble it could cause if it got free to air. Some desperate measures were going to have to be undertaken.
Ryan's mobile phone rang loudly as he sat outside admiring the lights dancing off the pool. He felt reluctant to answer it, especially when he saw it was Dan who was calling.
"Hello."
"Ryan hi, it’s Dan."
"I know."
"We haven't spoken since…"
"Cut the shit and get to the point."
"I have a proposal for you."
"And?"
"Well I thought it might be good to get you and the others back on Whose Line for a few guest spots."
Ryan almost laughed. "Why? Because the show is shit now it’s stars are gone…you make me sick Patterson," Ryan spat.
He hung up and then sent a quick message to the others telling them not to fall for Dan's patter.
The next two weeks were going to drag, and for once Ryan could think of nothing better than escaping back to the U.K.
