| The History of Garden City Lodge # 59 | |||||||||||
| Garden City Lodge # 59 was built on a solid foundation. The idea of the lodge was conceived in the minds of several reputable and outstanding citizens of Chicago in the early part of 1900. On June 27, 1900 a prayer was made to the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge Free & Accepted Masons of Illinois for dispensation to work. On September 8, 1900, Garden City was organized as an under dispensation lodge with Bro. James Renfroe as Worshipful Master, Bro. John T. Montgomery as Senior Warden, Bro. A.H. Dorsey as Junior Warden, Bro. Joseph Wright as Treasurer, Bro. Reuben G. Bell as Secretary, Bro.Lucien O. Renfroe as Senior Deacon, Bro. Arthur McCoo as Junior Deacon, and sixteen other members. They worked as such until October 11,1900, it was on this day at the convening of The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge their request was granted and Garden City Lodge # 59 was formed as a regular and well governed lodge. Garden City has been able to withstand many disappointments, trials and tribulations. We pride ourselves on our knowledge, wisdom, strength, friendship, morality, and brotherly love. We have furnished many high ranking executive officials to all branches of masonry and affiliates. Even though this brief account does not show members who did not hold the office of Worshipful Master, there are so many great men and historic events that have improved Freemasonry. Through the years this lodge has contributed to it's widows,we have a life membership with the NAACP,we have contributed to the Southern Christian Leaders Conference, YMCA, Urban League,Parker Community Academy(CPS),The Sickle Cell Disease Association of America,Phoenix House for Women and Children(Garden City Chapter#33 OESPHA) ,the National Multiple Schlerosis Society, and a host of other charities and organizations.
