I always wanted a garden to be part of my home. Since we had always lived in rentals I never wanted to invest the time and money into a garden that I couldn't take with me. One year I found a way I could take my investment with me if we had to leave: Container Gardening!

The first year I had a garden, I grew lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, broccoli, pumpkins, peppers, zucchini, and cucumbers -- all in flowerpots and buckets! The next year I also grew peas and beans. (The beans I grew in an old children's swimming pool!)

As my garden grew in size, I got a little braver, and as time went by, I felt settled enough to want a "real" garden. Since our yard consisted of little other than rock and clay, raised beds were ideal for my purposes. My dear husband built me box after box, year after year. I could even dig up the boughten soil and cart it away if we ever moved!

As time went by I added asparagus, strawberries, and several perennial herbs to my list. Talk about brave! By this time, we had more or less decided that we were staying where we were (in a mini home we do own but on a rented lot). Should we ever move, my perennials will come with me. As for ALL that soil I bought, well, I think I got my money's worth out of it already!!
Since then, I've added a large backyard vegetable garden and several other flower beds. Last year I used a neighbour's garden plot in a field not 500 meters from my own yard. A 10x20 piece of heaven! I also plan and plant our small town's flower boxes with the children at our school. Every year brings a new idea and more work. But it's not really work to a gardener at heart!
