March Vegetable Gardening

These tasks will probably be appropriate for March in zones 6-8. If you're in a colder area, you will have adjust accordingly. Don't forget that March can also be very fickle! In my area, we have seen very unusual weather over the years.

  1. Plan your garden if you haven't already. Decide which vegetables you want, buy the seeds, find out what should go where. Make sure you have all the garden tools you need.

  2. Make SURE your soil is workable.

  3. Prepare your soil for planting. Add compost, well-rotted manure and any other amendments that you feel are necessary. Remove any perennial weeds by digging deep and getting all the roots. As weed seeds sprout, lightly hoe the surface to kill them. You will probably have to do this several times.

  4. Plant root crops early, for example, carrots, beets, radishes, onions and parsnips. Toward the end of the month you can put in peas and perennial vegetables like asparagus and rhubarb. A tip -- keep your perennials to one side to make it easier to work in your garden.

  5. Start tomatoes and peppers indoors from seed.
