This is the garden which is being loaned to me by a kind old neighbour. It measures 10 x 20. I went to dig it up a few days ago. When my 90 year old neighbour saw me leave it after doing only 1/3, he came down with his tiller to finish the job. I tried to explain that I wasn't tired out, I was going to greet the kids who were getting home from school ... but I couldn't talk him out of it! You wouldn't believe this man -- he is in better shape than I am! *blush*
In the background, you can see our blue minihome on the other side of the log fence. The garden is in a field behind our lot. I usually plant potatoes, beans, and other low-care veggies. Last year I planted it with rows running the length of the patch, and all the water ran down the hill. This year the rows will run across the width of it!You can't see it from this angle but there is a little stream that I have to step over to get to the garden. Last year it was dry for most of the summer. It is supposed to be a very dry summer again this year.
The rhubarb in my own backyard is just starting to show some life! This bed measures about 4 x 40 in all. The rhubarb is at the far end. I was starting to make it a strawberry bed, but then my neighbour built a shed which shades that area for part of the day. (Oh well, it just brings out the creativity in this gardener! LOL) I'm going to see how the plants do this year before going any further.
Here's a view of the whole backyard garden. I just dug it over the other day ... what a job! A large portion of it is new and mainly clay, but I add compost and a bit of bagged topsoil to it every year.I usually plant peas and beans here because the soil is not good for most other vegetables.
This is why I am so eager to get the plastic on my greenhouse! This kind of kitchen mess is hard for a Flybaby to deal with!(To find out what a Flybaby is, click here.)
The lengths to which a truly insane gardener will go when her greenhouse hasn't been put up yet for the year! Hee hee! This is one of the two cars we have which are not working anymore. DH is under intense pressure from me to get them out of our yard and to get the greenhouse up. I'm hoping having plants in the car will draw the two tasks to his attention! HAHA! In the meantime, my baby plants are getting the light they need and some protection from the cold!
This is my problem area for the year. These boxes house my asparagus and strawberries. They were a cheap option so I realize I've only gotten what I paid for! LOL Every year they shift and it's a PITA getting them back in place and repainting them. They are all rotting out now and I'm trying to figure out a way to deal with the ugly mess. It's looking now as if DH might build one big long retaining wall and remove the whole thing ... AFTER he puts up my greenhouse, of course! LOL
