My Garden ... May 31, 2002

I was lucky enough to borrow my mom's camera again, so I got a good picture of what we ended up doing with that "box problem." DH built the back wall with old plywood. He cut it into three equal pieces, and anchored them in behind with steel pipes driven into the bank. I shored up the back with chunks of rock that I salvaged from an abandoned lot. In the front he built the box a bit lower than before, and there are no longer "sections" ... it is just one big long box.

Painting it was a pain (as usual) but it's done now and looks much better! I'm really glad I got it done before the blackflies landed! LOL (Ay yi yi, they are bad today!) I couldn't believe how rotten the boxes we took out were ... much worse than they appeared.

And ... see the rock path? That's how I hurt my foot, digging a few more down into the clay. Grrrrr. It's okay now though! I think I just pulled a muscle on my instep. There ARE muscles there, right???

Here's the greenhouse as of May 31st. I salvaged some beach rocks from an abandoned lot where the former owners had taken apart a flower bed
and heaved the rocks into the ditch. I "paved" the floor of my greenhouse with them and put driveway gravel in
between. I need to buy a bag of finer gravel to bring the level up a bit and make it smooth, but here's what
it looks like so far. I also painted the back wall, which had already gone through one season "au naturel."
I think it looks much better, although I do have a little bit more to paint ...

Just looking at that picture again, I'm wondering why DH always ends up putting the lettering on the plastic right on the front wall! LOL Every year he does it; wouldn't logic say to use other pieces there??? Hopefully next year we'll put fiberglass on the walls anyway!

Here's another shot of the yard ... from a different angle. Unfortunately, I was in a bit of a hurry to get the picture while the sun was still strong, and I caught the glare. Oh well. You can see the asparagus starting to come up!

I'll take another picture of the greenhouse when it's all done. I'm hoping to turn the whole thing into a "room" for myself, complete with a chair. The shelves are removable and will come down on the left side later in the summer. I think I will leave the right side furnished with various plants in pots.

Here's how the back garden is coming. You can see the rhubarb getting bigger at the very back. I have pole beans planted all down the center. The day after I took the picture, the beans showed their first leaves! The poles are up; I just have to brave the blackflies now to get the nails in them and the strings on! Uhhhh ... whoops! One looks crooked! I'll have to talk to the maintenance worker! Hee hee!

I'm not sure what else I'm putting in there; I think probably bush beans on each side since the soil is poor in that
section. I usually plant tomatoes there too. Hmmmmm .... Maybe the soil isn't as poor as I think. They do fairly well there.

Okay, that's it for today! Have a great gardening month!
