The Chaos War Rages

For fans of Dragons of Summer Flame, this is a new short-story collection, featuring the brave heroes, dark villains, differing races, and all varieties of dragons of one of the most popular fantasy worlds -- Krynn.

Edited by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, this volume highlights familiar and beloved characters (and creatures), filling in some intriguing gaps of lost Dragonlance history.

As with most anthologies (especially those from DragonLance), the tales here are a mixed bag. Most of these stories are absolutely horried with only one or two decent ones out of the bunch. I especially enjoyed Roger Moore's story that takes place in a parallel dimension. However I found my dislike for this book growing with almost every other short story I read even the decent ones. For a anthology titled the "Dragons of Chaos" surprisingly few chaos dragons appear in this story. I can only recall one story where a CHAOS DRAGON appeared and that being the one about the son of Huma. So if there's no chaos dragons then surely the setting will take place close to the period of the Chaos War. Again, the writers failed in this aspect. Many stories make no reference to a time period and the ones that do sometimes occur many years after the Chaos War, or during the War of the Lance, or BEFORE THE CATACLYSM. Now you might say at least there are dragons and here the writers get their third strike. I think at the most half of the stories actually featured a dragon. If I was going to come up with a title for this anthology, I think a more correct title for this would be KRYNN, A COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES THAT TAKE PLACE WITHIN THE WORLD OF KRYNN THROUGHOUT IT'S MANY CENTURIES OF EXISTENCE ABOUT ALL DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF THE WORLD YET CARRYING VERY LITTLE DEPTH WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE ONE GOOD STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE IN A PARALLEL DIMENSION. Now if I saw that title I might decide to not buy this book but at least I won't be buying it with false expectations.

In conclusion, I can't recommend this book to anyone unless you have some money to spend absolutely love DragonLance and have enough time to waste reading this book. However once that's done you'll probably never reread this book again in your lifetime. Perhaps your kids might one day pick it up and say "Oh look! I heard about this. This is one of those crappy books you read when you're taking a crap."
