Lifelong friends, they went their separate ways. Now they are together again, though each holds secrets from the others in his heart. They speak of a world shadowed with rumors of war. They speak of tales of strange monsters, creatures of myth, creatures of legend. They do not speak of their secrets. Not then. Not until a chance encounter with a beautiful, sorrowful woman, who bears a magical crystal staff, draws the companions deeper into the shadows, forever changing their lives and shaping the fate of the world. No one expected them to be heroes. Least of all, them.

I recently started to reread the DragonLance novels in my collection chronologically. Dragons of Autumn Twilight is the first novel in the DragonLance chronicles. It details what will become the War of the Lance. I remember reading this book in middle school and thinking it to be absolutely wonderful. However now that I had a chance to buy the novel and reread if after such a long time period I found this novel fell far too short of my nostalgic image of it. It seems like Weis and Hickman tried to give a synopsis of the gaming world that DragonLance is based off of and didn't give much attention to the plot and characters. The characters come off as tremendously flat, not enough depth given into what could be interesting backgrounds (this was resolved the preludes series which actually gives you some history on the characters). The plot comes off a little too easily with some of the little details falling into place very nicely and it makes you frustrated since it doesn't create the kindof suspense one would expect from a action novel. In conclusion, despite the flaws in this novel I would have to recommend it. My main reason for this is that the trilogy does get better in the next two volumes and these novels are essential to understanding and appreciating a large number of the remaining DragonLance novels of which some are extremely remarkable (i.e, The Legend of Huma and the Elven nations).
