89 Turbo wagon Driveshaft inspection.Automatic

by George Nunez

86-on wagon transmission support plate as in the car. Right is towards the front of the car.The plate is fastened with 6 nuts per side.
The rubber transmission mount bushings are pressed into this plate. the right side one is visible. These must be mounted with the arrow UP. Worn bushings transmit vibrations felt in the seats. The support is easy to remove.

The very worn splines on the rear of the driveshaft was ready to leave us stranded.
The new driveshaft is for comparison, the only indication was a clunk sound when reversing and occasionally as the transmission downshifted.
The inside area had a lot of rust in powder form.
This end slips over the front of the diferential.
See photo below.
The equally worn pinion splines, at this point a new rear end center section is required.
The bearings and gears however are in excellent condition, there is no sludge and there is still preload in the unit. Really a shame at 115,000 mi.
The 9 x 37 ratio is seen stamped on the nose of the pinion.
U-Joint , driveshaft and rear axle. The splines at the front of the driveshaft were OK, probably due to the very greasy environment in that area.
