89 N9TEA ENGINE SYMPTOMS:
Uncontrolled boost.
DIAGNOSIS:
Punctured wastegate actuator.
Figure on a full days work.
All except the compressor has
to be removed from the right
side of the engine.

|
RIGHT SIDE ENGINE Exhaust side of the block. The
turbo
oil outlet flange with O ring is seen
and the oil supply line coming from
behind the compressor. The alu.
dome beside the flange is a heat
shield for the engine mount. Now is
a good time to change the heater
hoses, the outlet hose from the
head is seen at top left.
About 3 hrs to get to this stage.

ON THE BENCH The manifold and turbo come out
as a unit. The new wastegate
actuator(golden) is already on and
its adjustable link to the WG visible.
The curved pipe is for water cool-
ing. This picture is as if looking
up from under the car.
Note you can reach all manifold
nuts from the top except the 2
pictured here on the right.

|
Garrett TBO 346 Exhaust side of the turbo with the
turbine visible beside the WG.
The link from the actuator extends
and opens the port so that the
turbine is by-passed.
The special nuts visible secure the
turbo to the exhaust manifold.
These are v. expensive, probably
superalloy.
