Pygmalion's Gaze Reimagined:
The Figure in Contemporary Ceramics

"Pygmalion, the mythical sculptor whose passion for his subject brought her to life as a beautiful young woman, is one of the enduring archetypes of figurative art.  At the same time, he embodies archaic notions about the passive female who only receives her identity through the forceful creation of a male.  The clay artists gathered here - established artists from around the nation, along with emerging artists whom they have selected - reexamine the role of gender and other social constructs in the way artists today view the figure.  With installations, life size figures and miniature figurines, they reference the entire history of the figure in clay, through a staggering array of styles and perspectives."
