Ralph's Game Log for March 2005   Minutes

Trias

BGoR: I found the group playing Hunters and Gatherers when I arrived. I didn't have to wait too long before Bruce and Rolf arrived. This was unique in that there was few continents created. It resulted in two huge islands and a few small ones. A very close game.

6 Nimmt!

BGoR: Played one hand of 6 nimmt while we waited for the other group to complete their game.
Bruce (6), Mike (7), Me (15), Joe (15), Cody (22), Jared (26)

20
Citadels

BGoR: Well, the other game finished but we ended up with six again. For some odd reason it was hard to split up into two groups of three. Luckily, I had brought a game that supported and played well with six. I had to teach Lisa and Mike the rules. Mike picked up the game but Lisa was a little slower to pick up the concepts, she's more of a Trival Pursuit type of player. This was one of those games in which it just feels like everybody is against you. I got robbed and killed several times. Lisa destroyed one of my buildings as payback for theiving her earlier. Mike whacked me at the end cause as he put it "I have all this money!!" Bruce and Rolf both finished the game with 8 buildings and color bonus.
Bruce (33), Rolf (30), Lisa (24), Joe (22), Mike (19), Me (15)

Torres

BGoR: Unlike the previous game where everthing went against me, this was a game in which everything went my way. Bruce left an opening for me to secure a high scoring tower during the first round. It was positioned so that I would have the highest knight for the game. Even the action cards that I bought seemed come up at the right time for me. This game was mine after the second round.

2nd
Puerto Rico

BGoR: Starting Order: Brad, Jeniffer, Harry, Don, Me
Harry posted a game night at a local Roundtable Pizza shops. I was kind of a weird locale but I went anyway. I got there to find Harry and Don playing MTG and Puerto Rico was set up. Brad was there too and he was pushing for Ursuppe. We started Puerto Rico cause it was already setup but it didn't help that Ursuppe didn't support five players. Don was the noobie so I went over the rules. Brad started first by taking the Mayor phase, which I thought was a wierd way to start. Later when the production phase Brad claim to generate a sugar. It turns out that Brad thought you could move colonist around when they where in San Juan. Of course we had to tell him he was playing it wrong. Don used the Corn whore strategy with a little nudging by me. I went super trader producing only Coffee and Tobacco throughout the entire game. I bought several big buildings but one mistake cost me the game. Midway through the game I shipped instead of buying. I was trying to lockout a boat with my tobacco but it gave Don plenty of points. Don had three bucks to my two at the end of the game.

Ra

BGoR: Brad taught the crew Ra while I was ordering my dinner. Don made some crazy bids so I'm not sure he understood the concept of the game. I was able to hang on till I was the final player in the first round. It was easy to push my luck since the Ra track was only half way filled. Scored some really huge points helped by four civ tiles. In the next round the Ra tiles came out like a flood. I was able to use my final chip before the final Ra tile was pulled. Everyone else was left with at least one chip. I don't know why but I alway seem to have the lowest sun total. This game was no exception, Brad got my five points.

Illuminati Deluxe

BGoR: Roger was up for the weekend to do some snowboarding. He stopped over on Saturday and he was jonesin for a game of illuminati. I was able to get John and his family to come over. I went over the rules for John, Penni and James.
Roger (Network), Me (Assassins), James (Barvarian), Penii (Churh of the Subgenius), John (Cthulu)
The game started with Penii kept saying "I don't get it". I should have know she was going to win it. As everyone who had a clue kept whacking each other, Penii just kept acquiring groups. The Church, we learn is pretty powerful. Knock out a group and it gets 10 MB per group lost. By the time we realize her power it was too late to stop her.

FBI

BGoR: Played this filler while we waited for more to show up. We later found out that we played just a bit wrong. Brad was alway dealing out 10 card per turn instead of 2 * number of players.
Brad (36), Me (31), Nate (31), Harry (18)

30
Bootleggers

BGoR: We've alway thought that not enough Thugs enter the game. Apparently Eagles games had a misprint on several of the cards. Mike went ahead and made changes based on the FAQ. The update definitely help, we had plenty of Thugs in the game. I picked up a still improvement and an extra truck early and that really help make money. I made even more money when I got majority control one of the speakeasies. Since I was the clear leader I got all sorts of attacks. I lost my still improvement, a truck got hijacked and the worst was the losing majority control the speakeasy. But it was the roll of the dice that cost me the game. On the final turn I had a six truck behind Mike's four truck. I rolled a three on three dice, arrrgggghhh!

Submarine

BGoR: My first play of a recent Colovini release. The idea is to collect tweleve different items from the ocean floor by using your submarine. A submarine only function if your tender is in the same column as the submarine. To collect a player must give up a card for the item plus he must give a card to players that have submarines at the same level or higher. It a little difficult because a player only start with twelve cards. This results in player hovering or shadowing other player's submarines. I intially went for collecting cards by the time I started collecting items I had plenty of leaches on my ass.

Muscat

BGoR: Most people were calling it an early night. That only left three of us for one final game, I pushed Muscat. I went over the rules. We misplayed a couple of rules, whiffing on the initial setup and the Career Jumping rule. Mike seemed to grasp the game but Jared had diffculty visualizing some of the actions. Even though we misplayed the game we all enjoyed the game.

Purchase: Amun-Re ($33)
Eurphat and Tigris

BGoR: Cody mentioned that he has owned E&T for two years and has yet to play. Well I felt obligated to teach this masterpiece. I got Brad and Bruce to join us. Since this was a teaching game I made crazy maneuvers for Cody's sake. It resulted in a game with lots of Monuments. My crazy aggressive play snagged me plenty of early points. My lead was whittled away through some example external conflicts with Brad getting the upper hand out of the mess. We had to call the game to start Mike's March Metro Madness tournament. Cody was pumped and is excited to play again!!
Brad (8), Me, Cody, Bruce (5)

60
Metro

BGoR: I wasn't going to play in Mike's March Metro Madness tournament but the tournament was one short and the other game was Kremlin. So I made my five buck donation. Early in the game Bruce and Nate started butting heads so I was thinking I could actually make it to the second round. Well it wasn't too long before people realized that I had more trains left than anybody, I got picked on bad. It wasn't much of game for me after that. Bruce got the longest path in the game, a 20 pointer. The final game was comprised of Bruce, Joe, Mike and Jared. Jared became Mike's March Metro Madness champion.
Bruce (74), Mike (50), Me (46), Nate (42)

45
Modern Art

BGoR: While the final game of Metro was being played, the rest of us losers played Modern Art. Anne and Rolf had only played this once. Rolf was not very fond of this game but was willing to give it another try. Nate and I had a rookie to our right so that meant we benefitted on fixed price auctions which were general underpriced. This game was about low end artist. "Yoko" never showed and "Light Metal" only score once. The rest of the time it was "Krypto", "Gitter" and "Christian P" in that order. Rolf still didn't like the game.
Nate (480), Me (447), Rolf (261), Anne (260)

60
Money

BGoR: Played one hand of my favorite set collecting game. Came close to collection one set and I was also holding two thirties and two twenties of another set in hopes that some would drop them in the final round. Sadly it didn't happened. Bruce got his set and three golds.
Bruce (530), Me (440), Mike (350), Nate (250)

Muscat

BGoR: I found a better translation of the rules and used it to make some player aids. Jared still had issues with the possible actions and Rolf didn't like the player aid. Looks like I'll have to add a picture or two. I used a lot of the vagrant options to get my other performers to the top and also hoping that Jared would understand the possible options. Since he didn't understand the options all he did was place pieces on the board. In the end I had some pieces in the upper ranks but Jared had a lot more pieces everywhere else. For not understanding the game he sure has a habit of winning it.

Trendy

Home: Some people were buzzing about Runebound so I offer to host a Runebound game. Played one hand of Trendy while we waited for Bruce and Jared to show up.

Runebound The Shadows of Margath

Home: We had sixed confirmed and two maybes, so we decided to split into two groups. Since Jared and I had played before I took the first group. The other group punted Runebound to play Viking Fury, the other game I was looking forward to playing. I gave each player the choice of two randomly dealt out characters.
Starting order: Harry (One Fist), Me (Varikas the Dead), Christina (Mordrog), Bruce (Silhouette)
Harry got off to a strong start by traveling the main road that connects most of the towns. My first encounter kicked my butt! I was behind the curve for the rest of the game. It didn't help that I couldn't pass a "before combat" test for three turns. After that I fail a werewolf challenge and become one for the rest of the game. Anytime I rolled a 1, I would lose an ally and someone would move me three spaces away. During this time Harry was running away with the game. He got to point where he was killing dragons. He was one kill away when Bruce used an event to steal his "Touch of Death". With that nice artifact he went dragon hunting and found Margrath. Margrath got smoked!

Runebound The Shadows of Margath

Home: James arrived midway through our game. He could have joined the other group in a game of TV Wars but hung out with us. When we finished everybody headed home. I felt bad so I offered to play it again.
Starting order: Me (Ronan of the Wild), James (Sir Valadir)
I got on the highway and loaded up on followers. James headed up into the wilderness area but that proved to be a little harsh for him. I got beefy so I went hunting dragons and found Margrath right away. I got smoked, losing all of my follwers in the process. While I was trying to hire more followers, James started stomping on Dragons. When he started heading towards Margrath I used a teleport to take on Margrath again. Lost all of my followers but this time I made the killing blow.
