ARTIST:  Mulberry Lane
ALBUM TITLE:
Run Your Own Race
RATING:
Excellent

Its Wilson Phillips!  No, its the Dixie Chicks!  No, wait a minute, its the Go-Gos!  Fleetwood Mac?

Youd be wrong.  Whichever way you put it, though, the sound of Jamie, Rachel, Allie and Heather Rizzuto, the sisters who make up Mulberry Lane, is nothing short of easy listening, potentially pleasing pop candy.  Their debut album, Run Your Own Race (Universal), is a sweet collection of quirky guitar tunes, syrupy ballads and airtight harmonies that may very well be the reincarnation of many long-gone girl groups.  Original?  Not very.  Satisfying?  Oh, yes.

The trick, as is obvious with most stellar acts, is excellent songwriting.  It becomes easier to respect Mulberry Lane because they write all their songs.  Carrier single Harmless, while criminally ignored at mainstream Philippine radio, is quite representative of this songwriting ease, with a readily hummable melody and light, spiritual lyrics.  Each sisters voice is distinguishable (the mark of a good act), with vocals ranging from the Belinda Carlisle-esque prowess of Allie to the low growl of Rachel, shades of June Pointer.

The country-like flavor of the album permeates other tracks, especially heart-wrenching ballads The Why, Just Another Friday, I Believe Its Love and second single Just One Breath.  Rather evil-sounding Crisis Line captures the essence of crisis like Alishas Attic.  Voice of the Beehive wouldve been proud.  Producers Metro (best-known for their work with Chers Believe and Tina Turners When The Heartache Is Over) try their hand at country-pop, and do it deliciously; remixes of Harmless and Just One Breath adapt the two tunes to radio perfectly.

With Harmless peaking at No. 25 on the Pop charts, gorgeous looks and a stunning album, Mulberry Lane deserves more than just one listen.  Give the CD a spin, take the car out and drive with the windows down.  You wont be disappointed.
