ARTIST: Macy Gray
ALBUM TITLE:
On How Life Is
RATING:
Excellent

When I first heard Macy Gray's gravelly voice on "Do Something," I thought to myself: this woman sounds unique.  Then "I Try" exploded at MTV and urban radio, and the world was introduced to a glorious new sound: the new school of old school, Macy Gray.

And what a revelation it is!  From the evocative emotion of "Caligula" to the sweet soul of "Still," Gray is fully in control.  The nuances of each individual sample contributes to a breathtaking tapestry of sound that is uniquely Gray's.

I appreciate the comparisons to Hill, Badu, Franklin, Etta Fitzgerald and Billie Holliday, but Gray is in a league of her own.  With a maturity that belies her own travels down the music freeway, she takes the wheel and drives comfortably and in control, the mark of a true artiste who will certainly keep you humming the entire trip.

ADDENDUM: You'll notice that it's actually a picture of Wilson Phillips' "Shadows and Light" up there instead of the Macy Gray album cover.  Well, I haven't scanned the "On How Life Is" album cover yet and I kinda thought that "Shadows and Light" looks pretty.  So sue me.
