| MESSAGE from GANNS I wrote this play in response to a dear friend of mine from college. He and I were close enough, and saw each other frequently in ROTC, which is the bastion of irony, as far as I and male camaraderie are concerned. I shared a lot with him, and he shared a lot with me as well. It was a good two years of friendship. Most of what we talked about involved women, our thoughts about them, my constant attempts to understand them and his exploits with them. Imagine then my shock when he came out to me the day of his graduation party. I have nothing against homosexuals, and while I have toyed with the idea of being, at the very least, bisexual, I am, bottom line, a heterosexual male whose friendship with a homosexual man should not have changed. My issue with this friend is the question of honesty and openness. To paraphrase Shakespeare: be true to yourself, and it shall follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any other man. I've had to deal with a lot of emotional turmoil as a result of this admission. Thanks to friends like Aol, Peewee, Kage, Cands, D.A., Nico, Binky, Helen, and most especially, the woman in my life, Catherine, I have come to terms with life and produced the work that you either would have watched or read on this site. And so, "AC-DC," my only complete play to date, was born. I dedicate it to a brave man, who I respect and am glad to have known. Eugene, this is for you. Back to mere madness |
