THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD

A MULTIMEDIA SLIDE SHOW

In the novel you are currently studying in class, Jullily and Liza are the main characters trying to escape slavery in Mississippi. They are travelling along the underground railroad to Canada and hopefully freedom. Although the story is fictional, it describes a number of events which may have actually happened.

The Underground Railroad was a significant part of North America's history. It was not underground. Because escaping slaves and the people who helped them were technically breaking the law, they had to stay out of sight. They went ""underground"" in terms of concealing their actions (National Geographic, 2002). In this assignment, you will be required to create a multimedia presentation slide show presenting the results of your research on the Underground Railroad. You must answer the questions listed below in a unique and creative manner, ensuring all the technical criteria are met.

1. Who? Who were the main people involved in the underground railroad? Be general in

this section, describing the roles of the abolitionists, Quakers, slaves, slave

hunters, station operators and conductors. You may also wish to highlight one or

two key people from the railroad.

2. What? What exactly was the underground railroad? How did it operate and what were

some of the key features. How did the slaves hide and travel? What was the

ultimate goal of those working on the railroad?

3. Where? Where did this migration of people take place? This would be a great

opportunity to use a map to supplement the presentation. Describe the routes

taken by slaves trying to escape.

4. When? What time period did this happen in? List some important dates and/or time

periods in which these events transpired.

5. Why? Why did the Underground Railroad exist? What conditions of the time period

led to this? Did every slave try to escape? Be sure to describe from a variety of

perspectives.

6. How? How did the Underground Railroad function? What were the ‘engines',

‘stations', ‘freight' and ‘cargo'. How did the slaves remain hidden?

The most basic of presentations will consist of 6 slides title who, what, where...etc.... You do not have to use these titles or answer these questions directly. Rather, present the information in a unique manner and upon concluding the presentation, your audience should be aware of the answers to the questions.
