The Way Forward
It finally happened. The country is facing a crisis and Nationalists got a good trashing at the polls. It was only a matter time. This government is just going through its last travails of death and so one would naturally enquire upon the direction this country is heading.
On a national level, one would expect the MLP to return to Castille, however this would only be possible if a good number of Nationalists decide to vote Labour. One would hope that the MLP would take this as a fact, i.e. that they are going to win. They do not have to throw mud at everybody until they are judged as paranoids, or promise lunatic tax holidays. These are not what the country needs. We do not need a government interested only in winning election, we need long-term planning and Alfred Sant might just be the right person for the job. We just need a serious government, and a serious government does not grow over-night. MLP needs to start by assuming responsibility towards its action while still in opposition. The work to solve the present problems must start as soon as they are called to office. If they think that they can do it all alone then no one will help them. The MLP must start by luring the technocrats that until now are still scared stiff of anything connected to the MLP. The rest of the civil society will follow. Nowadays, no party can address a general election relying solely on its grass roots. The government is a national administration and therefore the government should be a government of national unity. It should seek justice not revenge, pragmatic solutions not ideological dogmas. It should distance itself from the few pseudo experts that have choked the party’s outlook until now.
The MLP should start addressing the Nationalists. During the MEP elections about 9% of the electorate voted AD, but I do not think that they would be wasting their votes for General Election. This is last chance for Alfred Sant and maybe it is about time he starts listening to ones who truly love their country; the true nationalists.
