Our Summer of 2002 continued…..
In the same way that some folks look for ‘faces’ in the clouds, others look closer to home.  This first pair of photos were taken over 7,000 miles apart.  Earlier I mentioned history - the second pair of photographs relate directly to the early days of the Mono County area.

Taken on the road between Lone Pine and Whitney Portal - the ‘trail head for those heading up the mountain.  I’m not sure I approve of painting rocks, but this ‘portrait’ has been here for years, and it seems to have been refreshed recently.  I guess if the locals approve, I shouldn’t complain.  This is in the Alabama Hills area, noted for the number of western movies filmed here in the early days.  Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and Hopalong Cassidy.  In more recent years, Clint Eastwood, Jack Palance, Cary Grant, Jack Lemon and Natalie Wood all came here to make movies.
This ‘character’ was seen somewhere between the Atherton Tableland and Longreach in Queensland, Australia.  (It’s been a long time - I don’t remember exactly where.)  About all I can say is that someone picked up some litter (the “stubbies” used for eyes) and created something.  Art?  In the eye of the beholder?

There were two plaques.  The smaller of the two was being brought over the mountains - horseback - from the Fresno area.  I trust the text on this one is legible.
We had a group of gentlemen in the campground in August, to erect an historical marker in the nearby town of Mammoth Lakes.  “E Clampus Vitus”?  I gathered that it is an organization dedicated to preserving the history of the old mining areas - and having fun while doing so.  The groups heritage can be found by doing a search on the web.
