Never before has an already schizofrantic band dropped a more schizofrentic
collection of songs on the world. The third release by the Madison,
Wisconsin quartet is
their most ambitious, if uneven, album to date.
"Shut Your Mouth", the first track opens with singer Shirley Manson purring,
"Welcome, we love you...". Clearly she wasn't talking to fans of the band's
first two
records, including their Grammy-nominated sophomore masterpiece, Version
2.0, for if
the band truly loved their faithful, they would have given them something
they could sink
their teeth into.
Abbey Road always seemed to get to the point. Beautifulgarbage never does.
The album's highlights, though few, are brilliant. The Phil Spector-sounding
"Can't Cry These Tears" could get Manson inducted as an honorary Shangri-La,
while the
band shows it can still create catchy, even beautiful, melodies on tracks
such as "Breaking
up the Girl" (perhaps the most radio-friendly single on the album), "Drive
You Home",
and "Parade".
Studio geeks Butch Vig, Duke Erikson, and Steve Marker really had something
when they
put this band together. Perhaps they've simply taken grungy electronica as
far as it can go,
and they were looking for something else with beautifulgarbage. They can
keep looking.
