"In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit....

Here is a story that I have recently written.....

Sam was 4 when he got Jack. Jack was a Jack Russell terrier and Sam had named the puppy himself which was given to him by his Pop. He was the softest cutest little pup that Sam had ever seen and the two instantly loved each other. It made Pop so happy to see the wonderful friendship of the two coming together... it was just as he had hoped.

Every nite after dinner Sam would slip outside and share a piece of his sausage or chop that he had saved especially for him. Jack used to look forward to this treat and would always be waiting ever so patiently at the back door, listening attentively for the sound of Sam pitter pattering down the hallway. When Sam would open the door Jack would dance around excitedly before sitting with his paw up ready for the usual shake. A shake and a cuddle and then Jack would then be given his tasty treat. Sam had spent alot of time with Jack teaching him these tricks with the help from his Dad who also had had a dog when he was he was a boy.

Before bedtime Sam would go out and give Jack his last bedtime cuddle and Jack would always give Sam a big lick on the cheek. Sam used to say that it was Jack's way of kissing him goodnight which always used to make his mother and father smile.

When Sam started school, the first thing he would do when he got home would go out and see his best friend. There was always so much to tell Jack about his day of learning and fun. Jack just seemed to be always ready to listen. The two would play ball or have a tug of war or simply just roll around in the sweet smelling grass.

Jack was a friend that would always be there anytime, anyday.

Before long Sam was old enough to walk Jack around to the park by himself where they would sit on the merry-go-round and whizz around until they both were very dizzy. Sometimes Sam would ride his bike and Jack would run along beside him his little tongue dangling out of his mouth in such a funny way.

Years went by and the two became inseparable, even Sam's school friends didnt understand why he didnt want to go the skateboard park with them after school. When they started to go to the swimming pool in summer, Sam's reply would always be " no thanks, ive got things to do. His "things to do" was to go and hang out with his "best" friend, Jack.

Highschool had just started for Sam, he was now 12 years old and was getting really good grades. His family were very proud of him. It was in his first year of highschool that Sam was to receive some rather unexpected and distressing news.

On one particular day, no different from any other, Sam burst in the front door with the usual "hi mum" his bag on his back just being dumped by the front door in the usual spot. Greeting his mum with a kiss he realised that she was upset, she had tears in her eyes and she for a moment didnt quite know what to say. "Mum whats wrong" said Sam suddenly feeling that what she was going to say was not going to be good news. "Sam, something has happened to Jack"

Sam clearly now distressed, not really wanted to hear her, ran outside to the backgarden calling out for Jack. His voice was croaky and he called out again, his mum met him on the lawn and hugged him tight. "Sam, Jack was sick, very sick, I found him this morning and he was very unwell. I was going to call you home from school but i didnt really know what to do" she stammered. Sam let out a wail, as he hugged his mum really tight, the tears flowing down their cheeks as they both sobbed together. "WHY! WHY MUM! why Jack!" he shouted, anger now creeping into his voice. "Hes my best friend, he should be here, jumping up to greet me, licking my face" the tears were now falling onto Jack's fur. " i dont know, honey, i really dont know" said mum, " it really isnt fair"

It was then that Sam needed some space, he ran to his room, shut the door and laid on his bed, sobbing uncontrollably, still trying to come to terms with his loss. Dad came home early that night and went up to Sam's room to find his son, who was usually cheerful, laying very still on the bed. His eyes were swollen and his cheeks were stained with tears. Dad sat on the edge of the bed and gave Sam a comforting pat on his shoulders. "Im really sorry Son, i wish there was something I could say that would make things better" " I know Dad, Mum has also said the same thing" replied Sam, "but there is nothing now that will change this, Ive lost my best friend for ever.

The next day and for days on Sam felt like he was in a dream. It felt so different now, he didnt feel the same person anymore. His mum and dad were most worried about him. Mum rang up Pop the day that it had happened, but he was away and she left a message for him. She tried hard to talk to Sam but it was so difficult to say anything because she knew her poor boys heart was broken.

Saturday came, the first weekend without Jack and Sam by midmorning was still in his room, ever so silent, not wishing to do anything. Downstairs Mum and Dad were talking, "what can we do" asked Mum, this is so terrible to see Sam like this. "I dont know" said Dad, "this is certainly no good like this" They were interupted by a knock on the door, Mum rose to answer it to find Pop standing there, a strange carton in his arms and a nervous expression on his face. " I got your message about Jack, im here to see Sam" he said. Mum tears in her eyes replied "Come in, Dad, its so good of you to come, Sam is really in a bad way, he is still up in his room" "yes i know how he would be feeling, dear, i lost my best friend too when i was a boy, may i go up and see him" Sam's Dad who was ever so silent, cleared his throat, " i think Sam would really like to see you, go on up "

Pop left the kitchen and went upstairs. He got to Sam's room, so quiet it was behind the door. "Sam, are u here?" he said. Quietly Sam responded, and pop carefully put the strange carton he was holding down in the hall and opened Sams door. When Sam saw Pop he rushed over and hugged him, the tears started flowing again, as Sam tried so hard to tell him what had happened.

"Sam, its ok, its ok. I know what has happened. Jack was sick and hes gone to heaven, he at peace now. I understand how you feel Sam, it does hurt inside. I lost my best friend too when i was young. We are bound by the forces of nature that we cannot control and although this is hard to understand, this is what life is all about."

Sam, choking back tears stammered " i just wish that it didnt happen to me Pop, i really wish this didnt"

" I know, kid, i wish this didnt happen to you either, however life is not eternal, no animal, no tree, no plant but love is eternal because thats in your heart. You have to understand that life is an evolution, when one life ends, somewhere another begins. Here let me show you something and Pop rose from the bed. He went outside the door and returned with the box he had left in the hallway. Sam sat on the bed watching and wondering really not sure what Pop was doing. Pop gently placed the carton on the bed and then held Sam's hand. "Sam, just remember when one life ends, another begins" He gestured for Sam to open the box.

Sniffing and unsure what Pop was getting at, he carefully unfolded the lid of the box and ever so slowly peered inside. Pops eyes were starting to well up with tears as Sam took a breath in surprise, a smile ever so wide appeared on his face. There inside this box curled up asleep in a small ball was a puppy, a Jack Russell.

Sam this is "Jackie", this is the new life that has just begun. Sam, flooded with emotions threw his arms around Pop and hugged him ever so tight. "I dont know how to thank you Pop.

Just then Jackie awoke from her puppy dreams and seeing the lid was open jumped up on the edge of the box. Sam reached in and held her in his arms and Jackie stretched up to lick the side of his cheek. "Looks like she is giving you a kiss" chuckled Pop and Sam hugged her warmly.

They heard a quiet knock on the door and the door opened slowly. Mum and Dad came in to see the pair of them embracing each other with twinkles in their eyes and smiles on their faces ....

Can we join in ? asked Mum. "Sure" said Pop, lets share this love around!

Don't be dismayed at good-byes. A farewell is necessary before you can meet again. And meeting again, after moments or lifetimes, is certain for those who are friends.
