Gamma Phi originated in the fall of 1959, when several college women formed Sigma Theta Mu using some of the organizational patterns and ideas of Sigma Alpha Iota. Their motto was "Service Through Music", and their first president was Nancy Hearn. The petition of this chapter was installed on February 4, 1961, with Jeanette Kirk; National President of Sigma Alpha Iota at that time, presiding as installing officer. The newly founded Gamma Phi Chapter was comprised of sixteen members and five patronesses.
One of the first projects started in 1962 was the All-School Sing cosponsored with Phi Mu Alpha. This is the biggest single project of each year with all the proceeds going to service projects such as IMF, Foundation, scholarships, and equipment and materials for the School of Music, as well as for other departments at HSU. During homecoming, a coffee for School of Music alumni is also sponsored by Gamma Phi and Phi Mu Alpha. With each new year comes many new projects.
Gamma Phi chapter member, Kelli Nicole Marshall, died in an automobile accident on February 9, 1996. During the Spring of 1996 the Freshman Scholarship Recital was renamed Kelli Nicole Marshall Memorial Scholarship Recital in her honor. Also, a tree has been planted near Caldwell Music Hall in her honor. |
