Episode Synopsis

Season One, Pilot Episode: Stand

"Stand" began with our erstwhile Slayer, Rosalynn, having a nightmare associated with her calling as the Chosen One. In her nightmare she saw the previous Slayer killed in New York City by Spike, with Drusilla on hand for the event. Having never received training or instruction as a Slayer, Rosalynn believed it was just another bad nightmare, which she had been plagued by recently. Unbeknownst to her, Oscar Reyes was having the exact same nightmare that very night.

The next morning was the first day of school for Rosalynn, Robby, and Oscar who all share their first period class: World Cultures with Mr. Harding. Oscar and Robby didn't exactly get off to a good start, with Oscar gruffly demanding that Robby give up his seat. Robby acquiesced, but not without coming away with a poor opinion of Oscar. Oscar then proceeded to play the tough guy role with Rosalynn, rudely shaking her hand even though his were completely filthy with car grease. Rosalynn managed to take all this in stride, however, as she wasn't eager to make any enemies on her first day of public school. Before class got started, Rhonda Hale showed up and invited the three to join her for a first-day-of-school celebration at Moonspur's "hottest" night club (for High School students, anyway), Lunar Mare.

When class began, Mr. Harding made a boring speech about the importance of studying the different cultures of the world and doing well in his class, but after class got underway he was interrupted by a request for Rosalynn to come to the school office. She had been summoned to speak with Superintendent Matthias H. Potts. Potts acts as Superintendent of the school district, but his real job is with the Watcher's Council. For years he had been searching for the Slayer in Moonspur. When he saw that a student, Rosalynn, was transferring in from being previously homeschooled, he realized that Rosalynn was probably it - and the fact that she had been homeschooled was why he had so much difficulty locating her.

Despite Potts' best efforts, his initial attempts at convincing Rosalynn that she was the Chosen One, the Slayer, were unsuccessful. Perhaps the truth was just too much for Rosalynn to deal with. In any event, she left his office in tears, and largely determined to ignore what Potts had told her.

Later that same school day, Potts and Oscar had a run-in, as Potts tried to convince Oscar to be a better student this year. It culminated in Oscar receiving detention for several weeks, but a grudging respect grew between the two adversaries.

That same night Rosalynn went to Lunar Mare to hang out with her new friends, and Oscar himself decided to show up despite his better judgment. Oscar made amends with Rosalynn, reluctantly "apologizing" for his behavior earlier in the day. After making nice with Rosalynn, he offered to buy her a root beer float. Outside of her knowledge, he intimidated one of the school's "wimps" into giving him money to buy himself and Rosalynn the floats. Meanwhile, Robby wass just minding his own business at the bar.

While Oscar shook down his "friend" for money, Potts showed up at the club in a track suit and a cowboy hat. Why? He tracked two vampires there, and needed to convince Rosalynn that the people there were in danger, and it was up to her to deal with the situation. As he tried to explain the situation to her, his words were confirmed as the vampires were noticed forcing two girls to go with them into an alley outside the club. Rosalynn, eager just to put this stuff behind her, went outside to see what was going on, and Potts followed her. Oscar noticed Potts "harassing" her and decided to follow and see what was going on, and Robby noticed Oscar following Rosalynn and had it in mind to keep Oscar from giving her a hard time.

What they found in the alley was not what they expected. Rosalynn was facing down two vampires in full vamp-face who had "captured" Rhonda Hale and one of her friends. In the following combat, Rosalynn managed to stake both vampires, and Oscar was instrumental in holding one of them down so that Rosalynn could handle them one at a time. Oscar and Robby found it difficult to believe the whole situation, however, and went away from it believing it was an elaborate trick by Potts.

The next day at school, Robby, Oscar, and Rosalynn were not a in a good mood from their experiences the night before. Robby and Oscar almost got in a fight during lunch, and Robby went to go mull things over outdoors by himself. This caused him to miss Rosalynn who was trying to catch up with him and Oscar both. Rosalynn convinced Oscar to accept Potts' invite to explain things after school. In the meantime, Robby was asked by Mrs. Delworth to help tutor a fellow student in his Geometry class.

That night, Rosalynn and Oscar met with Potts and Potts explained the whole situation. Eventually, they called Robby and asked him to join them. Initially, Robby and Oscar were very skeptical and thought the whole thing was a trick to manipulate. On the other hand, Rosalynn seemed to have accepted her calling as the Slayer, although her slightly cheery attitude seemed a little unreal. After a lot of discussion and research, they determined that the vampires from the night before, who had mentioned another vampire named Crulen, were operating out of a crypt in Quincy's Peaceful Plains, the graveyard. With their research complete, the group set out to stop Crulen and his plans, whatever they may be.

Upon reaching the appropriate crypt, they got the jump on a couple of Crulen's guards and quickly dusted them. Within the crypt they were presented with a sort of puzzle - two doors, one with a moon engraved on it, the other with a sun engraved on it. The one with the moon appeared sort of "incomplete". Discovering a secret switch at the center of the sun engraving, the door opened to reveal a room with a wood platform. Upon the wood platform, a woman seemed to be resting on it. Robby could see that she seemed to have a green glow surrounding her.

Believing that she was a resting vampire, Rosalynn attempted to stake her, but the woman suddenly awoke and stopped her. She revealed that her name was Seraph and that she had been waiting for Rosalynn, the Slayer, to appear. Her "mission" she said, was to aid Rosalynn in her fight against evil. After some conversation to convince the Slayer and pals that Seraph really was on her side, she offered to prove it by helping to kill Crulen. She also revealed that she had the means to open the door with the moon engraved on it.

Placing a stone piece into the moon engraving in order to complete it, she was able to open the moon door which led to where Crulen was finishing a magic spell. Crulen had shackled three girls near a pool of water and was reciting a spell which caused the girls to levitate briefly while a milky-white cloud streamed out of their bodies and into the pool. After that finished, the girls fell to the ground, dead. Crulen, aware of the presence of the interlopers, turned to attack them. He failed to defeat the Slayer, Seraph, and the others, eventually being dusted by Rosalynn. Crulen had been defeated and removed from this world, but whatever he had attempted to do, he was apparently successful in it.

Meanwhile, a vampire within an office reported Crulen's success in completing the ritual, and that he had been slain by a teenage girl. He delivered this report to none other than Mr. Harding, who turns out to be Dravus, the Vampire Lord. And so, the players learn what their characters don't know yet: that their first period teacher appears to be the Big Bad himself.
