David Guillot Update

By Sherry Guillot

Hello! I want to wish everyone a very happy and healthy holiday season. I also want to share how very proud I am of my husband, David Guillot! David has undergone five cranial surgeries over the past two years. He has had several setbacks a blood clot, a very bad infection, pneumonia, etc. David is a fighter! I feel David started emerging in the spring of 2002 when the infection cleared. Gradually, he started speaking a few words, then complete sentences in September 2002. Now he carries our wonderful conversations!

David still has his sense of humor. He enjoys flicking ice cubes when your back is turned. He knows the alphabet and can write his ABCs. David loves to write! He can add, multiply, subtract and divide. David sings a lot. He loves the microphone! Some things never change. There are musicians that entertain the residents on a regular basis. In October 2003, one of the singers walked up to David and sang to him. David took the microphone out of her hand and started singing. He stole the show! The song was Unchained Melody. David likes to rhyme. You mention a name or a phrase and he will come up with rhymes! I believe David knows all the words to every Elvis song and also Merle Haggard.

David is very inquisitive. He wants to learn and enjoys it. He is very observant and takes in everything going on around him! Two weeks ago, a doctor asked David his social security number. He called it out without hesitation. I had never thought to ask him that before. Last weekend we were listening to Christmas music, specially the song Twelve Days of Christmas. David said "Sherry, that song doesn't make any sense"! What an accurate comment!

David is very affectionate. He always tells me how he loves me, misses me, needs me, etc. He loves kissing! But sometimes he's not too picky about who he wants to kiss. He told our roommate's wife last year "When you got it, you got it and ain't no need to fight it." David comforts me when I am upset. He never ceases to amaze me.

David loves cards. He also likes to look at photos. If anyone has any pictures of yourselves/David, please send them. He mentions a lot of names that I don't know; maybe they are some of you.

David needs constant stimulation. Myself and a caregiver/sitter work with him all day long writing, reading, flash cards, memory games, singing, range of motion exercises, etc. Physical therapy is vital to David's continual progress. Unfortunately, insurance will not pay for long-term therapy or a sitter. Without long-term therapy, David's chances for a full recovery are slim. David wants to dance and is frustrated that he cannot. He is dependent upon a wheelchair and two people to assist with his daily routine. Emotionally, he is good spirits!

Dr. Florence Barnett, our neurosurgeon, made the following comment to me last September after looking at his CAT scan. "David shouldn't be speaking much less do all these things that require complicated thought patterns! There is no medical explanation. David is a medical marvel. God is answering all our prayers! Please keep all your prayers coming. David will continue to improve with God's help, hard work and physical therapy.

I can go on forever telling you all the things David is doing and saying. But for now, I just wanted to inform every one of David's progress and hope this will make everyone's holiday brighter! Please continue to pray for David's complete healing!

Love in Christ,

Sherry Guillot
