| Special Presentation--a common interruption of regular programs on American TV. Just when you settle in for your favorite program, boom, that annoying graphic comes up and you know you are screwed. | |
| crude animations -- a Canadian tells me that the T&P style animations are a crude rendering of SP renderings.. as Canadian televison shows are cheap crude renderings of American shows. Note the cat and dog go, "bark bark" and "BRR BRR", typical Canadian bad acting. |
| Not Without my Anus--is a play on a made for TV movie (based on a true story) called "Not Without my Daughter", about a mother and daughter who get kidnapped in Iran. There are several scenes in T&P which reference this film. | |
| typewriter place and time--this is an "X-files" reference. "X-files" is a sci-fi thriller television show about aliens and other supernatural things and how the American government is somehow hiding something. | X-files Multimedia archive Serious X-files pages |
| day planner--a small book carried about by busy Americans in which you place dates and meetings. | |
| gas chamber -- a method of punishment where a criminal is placed in a small room, strapped down, and lethal gas is injected into the room until the criminal is dead. This method was also used by Nazis when they massacred and slaughtered millions of Jewish men, women, and children during the Holocaust. | Sorry, very hard to find pages which just give the facts. |
| Kroff Dinner -- Kraft Dinner, essentially day-glo orange cheese food powder made into a paste and mixed in boiled macaroni pasta. Yum yum. Apparently, a Canadian fetish and a defining aspect of their culture. A popular Canadian group, the Barenaked Ladies, were famous in the UK for throwing boxes of Kraft Dinner into the Euro audiences...something they can't get over there. For a lot of people, it's an obsession. | Kraft Dinner |
| the subway-- a Canadian tells me that Torontonians brag constantly about having a great subway system, most of it is above ground. You notice that on the subway in T&P, it's above ground, and of course, being in Canada, they go everywhere on it (truth is a lot of people in Canada have never even been near it). This continues the myth that everyone knows everyone else in Canada, despite the fact that it is the largest country in the world. |
| search for treasure -- I think this may be a reference to "Magic Garden" (or whatever it was called), a 70s era children's television program hosted by two guitar playing hippie chicks on rope swings. One of the things they used to do in the show was search for treasure. A lively little song would play while they romped about looking for treasure. It usually was in the treasure box, and they would pull out costumes and stuff and have an adventure. Ah, what a great show. I may be wrong about this ref, but I did immediately recall the "Magic Garden" show, or whatever it was called. | |
| ugly bob--this is Good Ole Charlie Brown, of Peanuts fame, who has always been ridiculed for being a "blockhead". Notice Ugly Bob has on an orange shirt, just like Chuck. Charlie Brown goes to summer camp and is hated by everyone until he puts on a brown paper sack on his head. Then he becomes very popular and is even elected President of the camp. | Official Peanuts Pages Charlie Brown |
| signing for package--In America, for security reasons and always "saving our asses from lawsuits", most independent postal companies require a signature from a recipient that the package they delivered was in fact, delivered. Argh. | United Parcel Service |
| aboot--Canadian accent for "about". | |
| Celine Dion--well, you know, Canadian pop singer or something who got famous doing national anthems. | Official Celene Dion page |
| "pray I don't alter it any further"--Darth Vader says this to Lando Calrissian in The Empire Strikes Back after he changes the deal they made and decides to take Chewbacca and Princess Leia with him as prisoners. Lando's response is, of course, "This deal is getting worse all the time." | Official Star Wars site |
| channel surfing-- they land briefly on a parody of the "Jerry Springer Show," possibly the most wild talk show ever. Jerry takes great pride in bringing on stage the most warped, violent, sexually crazed people, and letting them have a go at each other. | Jerry Springer: Too hot for TV |
| Roughriders vs Roughriders-- Americans find Canadian football names, scoring, styles etc hard to understand, they say the game makes no sense. |
| Fs on shirt--they are "fans". | |
