The
software installation is one of the worst parts of building a PC.
First if you're putting an old hard drive in with a different PC,
you're operating system in my case Windows 98 will pop up with found
new hardware for the different parts, graphics card, modem, sound
card will be the ones popping up the first time you successfully
boot.
But if you have a new hard drive,
you'll need a start up disk. Using a Win 98 start up disk you'll be
able to install all OS's. Don't think its as easy as popping in the
disk and letting it start on its own, it has to be loaded with a
start up disk. With the new hard drive will be error messages
usually 'INVALID SYSTEM DISK, INSERT THE DISK AND PRESS ANY KEY' you
put the start up disk in now and press a key. The disk will load
after a few seconds. It will load drivers to use the CD-ROM drive.
Once it has stopped and 'A:\>' appears type 'fdisk', this will
set a partition for MS DOS, usually 5% of the drive. The screen will
have a list of three options, select no.1 then you want to have the
largest available sized disk when it asks you. After all the work is
done it will ask you to reboot or restart. After restarting leave
the floppy in, when 'A:\>' appears type 'format c: \s' this will
make C: a system disk and format it ready for installing the OS.
After it finishes, put in the OS disk, type in 'd:' after A:\>
(A:\>d:) press enter. The D:\> will appear, type in 'setup',
now wait. The installation screen should appear. Now follow the
onscreen instructions to complete you new PC.
The next thing to top it of is to
install the drivers for your new hardware. AND that's your PC
finished.
