| SEASON REPORT |
31st January 2005Elverpool Rejects became the biggest spoiler in the history of Malaysian Blood Bowl after they defeated an under-manned Order of Mortis 2-0 to hand the Season 1 League title to Volcanica Raiders. The Mortisans had gone into the match requiring an outright win to put the league title beyond the Raiders reach. However, with the Wood Elven team leading 1-0 in the first half the match, it was evident that the Mortisans dream of becoming Season 1 champions was slowly turning into a nightmare. Just a fortnight ago, the Order of Mortis was sitting at the top of the league table with a perfect record of 6 wins and looked to have wrapped up the league title after their nearest challengers, Volcanica Raiders and Asgard Stormlords dropped crucial points in similar scoreless draws against Tilean Titans and Khemrian Lords respectively, to trail 5 points behind the Undead team with only 2 league matches remaining. With nothing else to lose, the Volcanica Raiders went into the Week 08 league match against the Order of Mortis, knowing that even a simple draw will hand the championship to the Undead team. And the drama began right after kick-off where a major riot broke out between the two fan-factions causing the match to be delayed for almost the whole duration of the first half. For safety reasons, the referee ruled that no extra-time will be added to compensate for the delay. The kick-off resumed and the Mortisans scored a quick Touchdown to put themselves in the driving seat. The Raiders almost equalised before the first half ended but their hobgoblin #09, Kublai, fumbled an easy hand-off which ended in a final minute scramble for the ball by both teams. With that, the Mortisans went into the break with a precious 1-0 lead, but will start the second half without their star Vampire, after the blood-sucker was badly hurt by a rampaging Chaos Dwarf blocker. When the second half resumed, the Raiders went into it with all guns blazing. Exploiting their superiority in numbers, it was just a matter of time before they found the equalising Touchdown. Yet, as the minutes trickled away, it looked as if the winning Touchdown will never come. Near the end, The Raiders looked as if they were going to score but the Mortisans Wight, Grim Face came flying at the Raider's ball-carrier, knocking him out into the Knock-Out pitch. Desperate, the Raiders rallied for one final attempt to find the winning Touchdown. And so, the burden of keeping their team's championship hopes alive fell onto 2 hobgoblins. Kublai made ammends for his first half blunder to cooly scoop up the ball and handed the ball to his team-mate, Jagir as fans gasped, many expecting the hobgoblin to fumble the hand-off just like his team-mate in the first half. The hobgoblin caught the ball and raced down the Touchdown zone for the most important Touchdown of the whole season. The win over the Order of Mortis meant that the Undead team will still have to win their final match against the Wood Elven team, Elverpool Rejects, assuming that the Raiders win their match against the Norse team, Asgard Stormlords. Even a draw in their final match will not be enough as the Raiders has a better Touchdown countback. To make matters worse for the Mortisans, the Raiders inflicted heavy injuries to the team where their leading Touchdown scorer, Ruud Ghoulit was killed and his team-mate, Paul Gcholes was seriously injured, thus crippling the Undead's strike-force for their final match against the elves. And as fate would have it, the Raiders went on to win their match against Stormlords 2-0, to pile more pressure on the Mortisans. Elverpool Rejects who had improved rapidly after chalking up back-to-back wins prior to the Mortisan match shattered the Mortisan hopes in the end with their historical 2-0 win. And thus, Coach Richard Nga who had led 4 other teams to a total of 6 league championship honours, led his latest team, the Volcanica Raiders, to their first ever League Championship title.
