| Where the NES Mario series ended
The last edition of the Super Mario Bros series for NES, SMB 3 was the most complete edition of the three. A throwback to SMB 1, there are eight worlds, with between eight to 13 or 14 levels in each. At the end of the eighth world, Bowser is back to try to stop you from rescuing Princess Toadstool.
SMB 3 has tons of cool stuff that the previous two titles lack. There are four new Marios: Raccoon Mario, Frog Mario, Hammer Mario, and my favorite, Takooni Mario. Raccoon Mario has the ability to fly, Frog Mario can swim much easier than a regular Mario, Hammer Mario can throw hammers like Hammer Bros do, and Takooni Mario can do all that Raccoon Mario can do, but can also turn into an invincible statue for a few seconds. At the end of each level (not including fortresses and airships), you get to pick a card which rotates between mushrooms, flowers, and stars. After you get three cards, you get 1UP if at least one card is different from the others, 2UP if all are mushrooms, 3UP if all are flowers, and 5UP if all are stars. There are also Toad's houses, where Toad lets you pick one of three boxes that contain good items; spade boxes, where you try to match three rotating pictures; and N cards, where there are 18 (I think) face-down cards, and you get to turn up a pair. If they match, you win the item on the card, and if you fail twice, you don't win crap! Basically, its a regular Super Mario Bros game, with tons of new stuff.
All three SMB titles are unique, and each has a substantial following as the favorite of the SMB titles for NES. When this came out, everyone in my elementary school was buzzing about how cool it was. I admit that for a while, it was my favorite of the series, but now I prefer #2, but #3 is still one of the best for the regular NES. |
