The Greatest Video Games - Revisited [Bulls vs. Blazers]
"HORRIBLE!" - Bill Walton

Thank God for Gary Grant

The game 'Bulls vs. Blazers' was the second in a line of horrible horrible basketball games produced by EA Sports. The series started with 'Lakers vs. Celtics' and ended with the terrible 'NBA Showtime.' Virtually all the games are the same, and Lakers vs. Celtics is basically different only in the cover that appears on the box. Bulls vs. Blazers has two things going for it though, A:It has Micheal Jordan and the Originals (Paxson, Grant, Pippen, Cartwright, Levingston, Purdue, the list goes on...) and B: The sweet opening music. Jordan was under contract with EA Sports at the time and didn't appear in other, better, basketball games. The opening music starts off with a killer lazy/bluesy riff that sounds like it coulda been straight from the guitar of Keith Richards. This is virtually the only song on the Bulls vs. Blazers 'soundtrack' as basically the rest of the game is played in silence.

The good people at EA Sports tried to give the players 'special moves.' Larry Bird has a turnaround jumper, Scottie Pippen does his double-pump slam, David Robinson does a windmill. This is great and all, but the gameplay is so horrible this neat little idea fell flat on its face. No one cares about a special move if all the 'normal moves' suck.

There are a few things wrong with this game. It is nearly impossible to make a three pointer. In fact, it is nearly impossible to make any sort of shot other than a layup. I remember reading another review for this game and it said, "You know you're not playing the real thing when Micheal Jordan can't hit a turnaround from the free-throw line." I think that quote sums this game up.

The gameplay is ridiculously slow. In an all-out fast break, it takes at least ten seconds for your player to grab the inbounds pass and sprint to the other end of the floor. I could basically put a brick on the d-pad, go to the bathroom and come back before my player crossed half court.

Graphics: 3
The graphics were fairly good at the time. The short players were short, the tall were tall, the bald were bald, etc. They gave Scottie Pippen his flat top and Horace Grant his goggles. Steve Kerr looks like Steve Kerr. The players are really small, but for 1991 it has very good graphics. The problem is that this game was made in '93.
Playability: 0
Thats right. I gave this game a zero. The only three pointers I ever make are with my big slow white center when I pull up from just after the half-court line. There is something about that spot where I can hit about 25% of them. Other then that no other shots, three pointers or 10-footers go in with the regularity that they should. This lack of shooting ability has given rise to what I called 'the Gary Grant factor.' Since no player can hit shots, the only valuable players are those that are fast and can drive to the basket easier. Therefore, the best player on the game is Gary Grant, a speedy gaurd for the Clippers who never made an impact on a real NBA Team. (This is much like the Eric Piatkowski factor on the newer NBA Live games, except the Piatkowski factor is the exact opposite: he can shoot instead of drive).
Fun Factor: 3
Despite how horrible this game is, I actually remember playing it alot and thinking it was good when it first came out. My friend and I had many a tournament (since there was no season option). Without the nostalgia effect, I think that this game may deserve a 1... maybe a 0.
