It was a
dark and stormy night...
The day was
24th of April 2000. Rocky Opiña and John Phillips Bengero envisioned
of submitting a FAQ for Fear Effect to GameFAQs. Halfway through the FAQ,
Rocky realized that they should instead have a site like GameFAQs. Rocky
quickly made a name for the site, GameOPS. The name stands for GameOPSpiña,
or OPS which refers to Rocky's surname. Phillips then started making a
logo for the site.

GameOPS was
first conceptualized to have a database of FAQs, Cheats, and Reviews for
different video games. Our aim was to provide Filipino gamers the help
they need in completing or buying a video game. With Rocky Opiña
being a self proclaimed RPG King, and Phillips having video game experience
since childhood, they started reviewing games and making FAQs for them.
However, since there are a lot of games to review and make FAQs to make,
the launch of the website was postponed.
During this
time, Phillips began the restructuring of GameOPS. From a GameFAQs like
site, Phillips suggested to Rocky the concept of having News content to
the site. Phillips picked the abs-cbnNEWS.com as the first layout of the
site. The site also had a new and sleek logo, which was made by Jefferson
Junatas.
With the
nearing of the launch date, the idea of having readers sent their own
reviews to help us was proposed by Rocky and then said the first slogan:
"Speak Your Mind". He then followed it with another "It's
Not the System, It's All About the Game".
On October
26, 2000 Rocky and Phillips uploaded the first ever issue of GameOPS.
The staff grew and grew. More ideas for the site started flowing. Germaine
Ang suggested to have a PC Tips section while Rocky had an idea of having
a spy reporter. But due to our school works the site was not updated regularly.
On March 2001, the site was temporarily shut down. Jay Encarnacion started
to work on several game reviews for old systems, while Rocky seemed to
be no longer interested in contributing the site. Phillips now started
to work on GameOPS version 2. Version 2 is an original design and no longer
imitates the layout of abs-cbnNEWS.com.
With the
dream of becoming a site like GameSpot, GameOPS promises to bring you
all the news, reviews, and information you need to know about video games,
because GameOPS is the ONLY Ultimate Filipino Site for Video Games.
