Lanah is a loyal, hard-working girl who is trying to do better in school. Her mother died when she was little. What Lanah remembers most about her mother is the way she danced; Lanah wants to be as good a dancer as her mother was. One day, after chasing a boy who she thought was kidnapping a young girl, she discovered Shiraria. The girl turned out to be a princess of Shiraria; the boy, a member of the guard. The princess told Lanah that her best friend Lyncea had been kidnapped by the evil Queen Zedona, and that in order to save her she would have to find the Silve, a magical instrument, and use it against the queen. Lanah left her world to save her friend. But soon she realizes there is more to Shiraria than just her initial mission.

Lyncea is Lanah's best friend; she is much better off financially than Lanah. She was kidnapped by a young man in Queen Zedona's guard and taken to Shiraria, where she finds herself having to deal with conflicting feelings and a job. She is intrigued by Evonis, her kidnapper, and by the mysterious history (which just happens to be her best subject in school) of Shiraria. Without knowing it, Lyncea will later become a problem in Lanah's quest to save her and the magical world.

The princess of Harmonia, Miara is particularly adept in the use of magic. She is playful, honest, and cheerful. She was one of the two who led Lanah to Shiraria. Miara presents the situation to Lanah as a rescue operation. However, she has other reasons for entering Discordia. She leads the expedition into the dark kingdom with two members of the guard and becomes fond of the Earth-girl (Lanah). She has a mysterious connection to Lanah that neither are aware of and will be revealed in the story.

A cold, dedicated follower of Queen Zedona, Evonis is willing to go to the ends of Shiraria and Earth for his queen. He was an orphan boy who, after a fateful mishap, the queen took in and raised in court. He is not the highest ranking officer in the guard, but it is evident that he is the queen's favorite. Because of this, many in court are jealous of him. Evonis brought Lyncea to Shiraria as a part of the queen's plan to take over Harmonia, the good kingdom. He is an excellent tactician, but still a little wet behind the ears. He would follow Zedona to the end, even if it meant betraying Discordia.

He is energetic and extremely loyal to his friends (which is a rather large group of people who may not even be aware of his friendship). He is betrothed to Miara, and perhaps because of this he is very protective of her, more so than of the others. He has a tragic past.
