GALT LOCOMOTIVES
The Home of the Little Purple Engine
From a small boy I have always wanted to get into Model Engineering, but never found the time or the money to do so.  After getting married and having a family of my own I regained the impetus to do so, especially as my brother-in-law is into Model Engineering and has a 5 inch gauge Class 52 Western diesel from Phoenix locomotives.  After helping him out at his local Model Engineering club open day at Canvey Island, I once again caught the bug, and spent the next four months trying to find the right loco for my pocket and me.  I eventually chose a Trojan 0-4-0 electric saddle tank from Ride On Railways, which could pull a number of people, travel round a garden layout (My ultimate dream) with a 10ft or 2.94m radius, and presented the look I wanted.  My ultimate aim is real steam, but with a young family, I dont really believe their patience or my pockets would stretch that far at the moment.
Introduction
Despite there being many websites concerning model engineering I have, so far, not found any that provide particularly much information concerning the preparation and painting of the metalwork etc.  Consequently, I have provided a fairly detailed history of what I did while building the Trojan, the fun I have had doing so, (but dont let on to my wife) and what I learnt in the process.  No doubt some readers will consider what I did and the approaches I used were wrong or misguided, but we all have to start from somewhere, especially when there does not appear to be any documented methodology readily available. Anyway, as someone once said to me

With Model Engineering you can have a family and a mistress at the same time.

Also watch out for the green boxes throughout this website.  They contain, what I believe are, lots of useful Suggestions and above all WarningsWhere a Suggestion is in Red, it indicates a problem or mistake that I made from which lessons can be learnt.
Many thanks for looking at my pages and I hope they are of some use.  If you spot any mistakes or require further information please contact me on the Contact Me link.
