Pet Care and Training
by Dr. Robert Tysen Martin, D.V.M.

Recently many Sim communities have had the opportunity to adopt pets.  The Simmerset Humane Society wants you to know that adopting a pet is a very great responsibility for your family.  A dog or cat becomes a part of your family, and this fact should make you aware of the sacred charge that you are undertaking. I know that you must love pets because in expanding your community to pet ownership, you live with the constant threat of plague, and all the problems that come with it.  The threat of Upside Down Head Syndrome, and all the other problems inherent in our new way of living.  You chose to live in this new age because of your love for animals.  I know we did at Simmerset.  If you did not want pets, you would have let the great Sim expansion end at the sunny beaches and snowy alpine resorts.  So we need to teach our dogs and cats to be good members of our families.
We already know that you love your new family member.  So whether you adopted a stray that came to your door, that you fell in love with, or you adopted them from a pet adoption center, you want them to become the best friends you can ever want.
Well, making sure they have food and water is a basic requirement. Remember to fill their bowls with water and food. You will also need to buy a bath for your dog, and provide them with a comfortable bed to sleep in.  But the most important thing to remember about our new family members is they need training. Someone in your household must take the responsibility of training them.  Or, better yet, if you have a large family everyone can take part in the training process. They can be trained in obedience and tricks.  A pet that is house-broken will be a definite joy to it's master and to itself.  In this manner you not only interact with your new family member, but make them a well adjusted member of your household.  Remember they love you and depend on you for their care.  Training takes time and effort.  But the reward is very great.  Your pet will not only honor it's family by bringing home blue ribbons at the pet shows, but will chase varmints from your garden and burglars from your home.  Your cat or dog will greet you when you come home from work and let you know you are loved unconditionally.  Unconditional love.  What a reward from a member of your Sim family.  So take that extra effort and train your pet.
And if you have a busy household, hire the pet trainer who is available at the adoption centers to train your pet. After all, he went to school to learn all the up-to-date training methods, and he can make your pet a more enjoyable family member.  Whether you fell in love with the pet on the steps of your house or at the adoption center, you will be happier with them when they are trained.  They want to please you.  Because they love you.  And a well-trained pet will be a joy to your family. If you don't have the time to do it yourself, then the pet trainer is worth the extra money.
Another thing to remember, if you want to get a pet such as fish, birds, or reptiles. They need just as much care, and you must exercise wisdom in adopting them.  You still must feed them, and pay attention to them.  Also, remember that birds and cats do not necessarily mix.  So if you want small birds, it may not be prudent to get a cat.  Or vice versa.  My advice is to get the pet you want, and be prudent about your choice.  You are undertaking a great trust in adopting a pet.  May you have no regrets.  Only the joy of having a family member that you love and want.
